From intuitive eating to eco-friendly everything, we have made promising and dramatic wellness changes in the last year. Building on the progress we made in 2018, we can expect that wellness will only continue to become more accessible and conscientious in the new year.
We can already tell that 2019 is sure to be an exciting year in health and wellness. More so than ever, we’ll get back to our roots of using ancient practices and blend them into our advanced, modern ways. Keep these 10 trends in mind as you plan out your year and put your New Year’s Resolutions into action.
Eco-friendly is everywhere.
Everyone is joining the green train. Between all the secondhand shops, reusable straws and upcycled materials - sustainable and eco-friendly will continue to be a major player in the wellness world. Google searches for beeswax wraps, the freshest zero waste trend, is up 146%.
Consumers are beginning to recognize the importance of sustained environmental health. In 2019, we expect people to go green and beyond in minimizing plastic pollution and waste. Brands will minimize or eliminate entirely the use of plastic packaging making a step toward innovative package and products that are reusable, up-cycled and minimal.
Nut milks are continuing to be a powerhouse trend.
Oat milk has been one of the latest to hit the market and it’s hit it hard. Oatly has been said to have increased production by 1,250 percent as compared to last year. Get ready for it to show up in not only your morning coffee, but as a star ingredient in alt-yogurts or in “nice creams.”
Not only is it easier and more convenient to make homemade nut milks - milks like oat milk or almond milk are high in vitamins and low in sugars compared to their dairy friends.
IV drips are making their way into wellness routines.
Yes, IV drips have been a godsend for a quick hangover cure but wellness insiders now are making this quick method of taking in nutrients a regular thing—thanks to its reputed ability to thoroughly hydrate you and add a vitamin, mineral and amino acid boost to your bloodstream in levels that would be impossible to absorb orally.
IV therapy is a quick way to give your body what it needs and the effects are almost instant. In a world where everything is at your fingertips, this is highly appealing for a consumer. Not to mention, most are entirely customizable and an excellent boost in energy.
Make way for elderberries.
The newest fruit to hit the scene, elderberries are on the rise thanks to their healthy and anti-inflammatory effects. In addition to being highly nutritious, elderberries help fight infections and support the heart.
A new standard for coffee.
So long are the days where everyone would order a black coffee. Today, wellness enthusiasts want to step up their coffee game and load on the benefits whether that’s MCT oil, collagen, turmeric or functional mushrooms. MCT oil, especially, is expected to reach $2.46 billion by 2025.
You can begin to see this at restaurants where finer coffee options will be offered - maybe even a coffee menu!
Fitbit will still be the #1 fitness accessory.
Good news! Your FitBit isn’t going off the market anytime soon. The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) predicts fitness and activity trackers - like the FitBit - will continue to be a leading trend for 2019. Fitness trackers are a fantastic technology creation because they track practically everything concerning your health and fitness including how many miles you walk or run, how many calories you eat and how you sleep at night.
FitBits are only going to get more advanced with features related to female health monitoring and apps that can help track activities such as skiing, snowboarding, and skateboarding.
Going clean and going sober.
More and more, people are ditching the alcohol and opting for a more sober lifestyle. The Pinterest 100 reports that “sober living” went up by 746%. According to a 2017 study by Nielsen Consumer & Media View, more millennials are less likely to drink than their elders. This and the fact that more celebrities and influencers are declaring sobriety seems to be something to be followed for the year.
Spiritual meets skincare.
Google searches for “crystal healing” in the last four years have shot up by 40 percent, driven by the spirituality trend. The growth of beauty, facials and treatments that focus on energy healing, rituals and crystals is set to make 2019 the year your skin gets its own chakra-balancing system.
As well as spiritual treatments, like reiki, this also includes things like gemstone-infused or spirit-infused skincare products and brands like Aveda and Elemis are in on it.
The ancient art of Ayurveda will get modern—and ubiquitous.
The ancient healing practice of Ayurveda is not unfamiliar to the wellness space and it has spurred other health trends including an obsession with turmeric. Hollywood has been a big proponent in bringing Ayurveda mainstream by sharing their experiences with the Ayurvedic cleanse called panchakarma. The panchakarma (which includes a specific diet, herbal regimen, oil rituals, and enemas) has gone from a fringe, crunchy detox to the program of choice for Hollywood's elite. Those in wellness are even more on a search for a true mind, body and spirit connection.
Wellness will arrive in mainstream drugstores.
One big reason we’re excited for the wellness industry new stride this year is because of it’s accessibility. We can find more neighborhood drugstore that offer the wellness products we’ve come to know and love. Chains like Target, Walgreens, CVS, and Walmart are now stocking their shelves with more wellness essentials, especially those tailored to gut health, immune health, and holistic women's health. Brands like Dr. Teal’s and Gaia are not only widely available online but also in shelves. Global Wellness Institute reports that the $3.4 trillion global wellness market is now three times larger than the pharmaceutical industry so it’s no surprise more stores are welcoming in wellness.
We’re looking forward to transforming and evolving ourselves and the way we interact in wellness in the new year. Are you ready for 2019?
